Tor Kenward
FOUNDER, TOR WINES
TOR Wines, founded by Tor and Susan Kenward, encapsulates nearly fifty years of insights, relationships, and experiences drawn from the evolution of the Napa Valley wine industry. From its humble beginnings in the mid-seventies, when fewer than fifty wineries dotted the landscape, to today’s thriving community of over 800, Tor has served on the front lines of the Napa Valley wine industry. His mentors and friends along the journey include Robert Mondavi, Julia Child, and many others. His bestselling book, Reflections of a Vintner, chronicles this extraordinary journey.
At TOR Wines today, we are devoted to crafting exceptional single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, as well as rare cuvées of co-fermented Bordeaux varieties called Black and Pure Magic. Each wine is made with minimal intervention and bottled in limited quantities, with each bottle bearing the number of barrels produced. Our guiding philosophy is simple: we strive to stay out of the way, allowing the vineyard to fully express itself. The TOR winemaking team has been led by Jeff Ames since its founding in 2001. Our shared vision has led to nineteen 100-point scores for TOR wines.
TOR Wines is 100% family-owned, as are all its vineyard partnerships. Over the last five decades, Tor has searched for vineyards he considers Napa Valley First Growths and forged close relationships with the growers. TOR now makes wine from 11 blocks in Beckstoffer To Kalon, two in Beckstoffer Dr. Crane, three in Vine Hill Ranch, two in Melanson Vineyard atop Pritchard Hill, and two in Hyde Vineyard in Carneros. To Kalon was rated as one of the world's top ten vineyards by Wine Spectator in 2024.
In 2021, Steven Spurrier and Patricia Gallaher restaged their infamous Paris Tasting in Napa Valley, pitting ten of the world's top Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines against each other, tasted blind by wine experts. The 2016 TOR Beckstoffer To Kalon placed #1 in the tasting, competing against Château Mouton, Scarecrow, Colgin, and six other world-famous wines from the same vintage. Tor’s journey has come full circle—from the first Paris Tasting in 1976 when he arrived in Napa Valley to almost a half-century later, winning one of the world’s most famous tastings. The journey continues today with each new TOR vintage.
